Salute to Seva! Join Innerlight teachers in their quest to offer peace to the AIDS orphans in South Africa. Salute to Seva will comprise of 108 Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations) as a form of yoga ritual inspired by the cultural significance of the number. Why 108? 108 is the number of names for Shiva, the Hindu deity, “The Auspicious One” 108 is twice the number "54", which is the number of sounds in Sanskrit (sacred Indian langauge). Each has masculine and feminine, shiva and shakti. 108 is the number of names for Buddha 108 is the Chinese number representing "man" 108 is the number of beads on a Catholic rosary.
108 is the number of beads on a Tibetan "mala" (prayer beads, analagous to a rosary).

108 energy lines run through our bodies converging at the heart chakra 1, 0, and 8: 1 stands for God or higher Truth, 0 stands for emptiness or completeness in spiritual practice, and 8 stands for infinity or eternity. 108 is twelve times the number 9, which is the number of vinyasa (movements linked to breath) in a Sun Salutation. Surya Namaskar, the Sun Salutation, is a series of 12 postures performed in a single, graceful flow. Each movement is coordinated with the breath. The Sun Salutation builds strength and increases flexibility.

Come for all or part of the 108 Salutations. All levels are welcome. Modifications to the traditional Sun Salute will be encouraged.

Off the Mat, Into the World is a program of the non-profit, The Engage Network http://www.engagenet.org/.  Any funds raised in the 2010 Global Seva Challenge and will fund multiple projects in South Africa for partners working to eradicate the AIDS crisis.
